External hemorrhoids are  swollen tissues and blood vessels located around the rim of the anus. External hemorrhoids can be very painful because the surrounding skin is very sensitive. Because hemorrhoids are veins they are blue in color. However, inflamed hemorrhoid tissues can swell up and appear red.

Symptoms of Internal Hemorrhoids
Internal hemorrhoids are located further up inside the anal canal. Internal hemorrhoids are thought to be less painful but they may bleed when you are trying to pass stools that are too hard. You may also see mucus around your stool when it passes.
When internal hemorrhoids protrude through the anus it is known as a protruding hemorrhoid.

Internal hemorrhoids are commonly classified on a scale of four degrees.
